The sale of an 1890 steam car for nearly a million dollars signaled the ongoing strength of the collector car hobby and the value of extremely rare automobiles.  The sale was part of the Christie’s Auction recently held at the 32nd annual Retromobile in Paris.

This extravaganza is equal parts collector car show, parts swap meet, auction and opportunity for new car manufacturers to mingle with a large number of automotive enthusiasts.

It’s the place for collectors to gawk, mingle and shop for that rare headlight or wiring harness they desperately need for their latest restoration.  The floor of the Port des Versailles Exhibition Center overflows with booths stuffed full of the most obscure automotive paraphernalia on the planet.

This was the perfect setting for Christie’s to bring its circa 1890 De Dion Bouton et Trepardoux, Steam Quadricycle to market.  While much attention was diverted by the mysterious cancellation of the sale of the famed Auto Union D-Type racer at the same auction (now back on) – the crowd was treated with a line up of rare Mercedes, Talbot Lagos, Ferraris and other exotica.  Some of which garnered a million plus as they rolled across the block.
