Auto racing legend Mickey Thompson was called the fastest man alive but it took more than sixteen years for the wheels of justice to come across the finish line with a verdict in his death.
Thompson’s former partner, Mike Goodwin was found guilty and sentenced to two consecutive terms of life in prison without the possibility of parole for his role in the deaths of Mickey and Trudy Thompson.
Ironically, Thompson and his wife were shot to death by two killers who road up to them on bicycles as the couple was leaving their gated home in a Los Angeles suburb. The jury apparently agreed with the prosecutor’s contention that Goodwin hired the hit men to kill Thompson as an act of revenge triggered by a rancorous business deal that he lost.
According to jalopnik.com, Goodwin’s attorney, public defender Elena Saris said, "We don't believe justice was served. We believe passion controlled and there was a Hollywood version of events." Being Hollywood there is of course a film in the works. Actually, according to Daily Variety – there are two films being planned, one a documentary and the other a feature. The same production company is behind both. The feature is being written by David Baxter who also wrote a script about famed European racer Tazio Nuvolari. The documentary is coming together with the help of Mike McCoy who produced the big screen documentary, “Dust to Glory,” about the fabled Mexican offroad race, the Baja 1000.
