Christie’s Crowd at Monterey Auction Greets Car With Cheers

Carol King,   Friday, August 17 2007

ImageThe sale of Steve McQueen’s 1963 Ferrari Lusso, for $2,310,000 to an anonymous bidder, at Christie’s annual Monterey car auction, exceeded the auction house’s highest expectations, according to Christopher Sanger, Head of Car Sales.

It confirmed “the continuing allure of one of the most important pop icons of our time. Considered to be one of the most important celebrity-owned cars ever to come to auction, the 800-strong crowd greeted its arrival on the block with cheers and unbridled enthusiasm,” Sanger said.

ImageThe Ferrari wasn’t the only car that exceeded Christie’s expectations.  A 1930 Duesenberg J Convertible Berline, coachwork by LeBaron – one of only three examples in this configuration was estimated to go for $700,000-850,000 – sold for $902,000.  Christie’s Sanger reported that “many cars exceeded their high sale estimates, and the 18-car Private European Collection was 100% sold.”
