ImageLONDON -- After a month of behind the scenes negotiations the 1989 Championship-winning Sauber C9 Group C race car has been sold by Bonhams’ auction.

The car had been offered at the Bonhams Retromobile sale in Paris in February this year, but bidding fell just short of the reserve price.

The buyer - an internationally recognized collector and racer – is aiming to get the car race-ready in time for Spa this May. Failing that, first time out will be the 2008 Le Mans support race.

James Knight, Bonhams’ International Director of Motoring, said, “It was a real team effort. My colleague Philip Kantor was dealing with a vendor who was still prepared to sell and I was dealing with a bidder still prepared to buy. All parties are delighted with the outcome and the price achieved – over £1m – firmly places important Group C Race Cars at the upper echelons of the Collectors’ motor Car market.”
