As the fascination with space travel blossomed and the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States began, in the 1950s, all American automakers were infected by "space age" design.
In 1954, Ford embraced this fad with their experimental Atmos and a year later the Mystere. Stylists designed the Mystere to make sure its rocket like lines were fit for take off.
Its curved front glass swept back to the rear door pillar. The complete assembly lifted up like the canopy over a jet-fighter cockpit. The car didn’t have roll down windows so occupants had to rely on a rooftop vent to relieve the heat built up in the glass bowl cockpit.

The cars rear-mounted turbine engine was just what one would expect to find in this land rocket. Its aviation inspired controls, instead of a steering wheel, completed the futuristic design. Everything in the Mystere looked like it belonged in a Sci-Fi inspired space ship.
