ImageMonterey Bay, CA (August 17, 2007) -- One of the not to be missed events during the Pebble Beach weekend is the Concorso Italiano. Think of this as an art fair of Italian automotive sculpture.

The annual Concorso takes place on the Friday before the Pebble Beach Councours and was once again held at the Bayonet Blackhawk Golf Course, close to Fort Ord, about 25-45 minutes away from Pebble Beach -- depending on traffic.

A host of anniversaries gave Italian car lovers more reasons to celebrate their favorite sleek and sexy automotive stallions.

ImageLamborghini’s president was on hand to talk about thirty-five years of the Lamborghini Countach and to introduce the new Gallardo Superleggera.  His presence at this enthusiast event let the throngs of Lamborghini owners know how important they are to the company.

ImageFerrari fans saluted sixty years of the fabled marque and fifty years since the Ferrari 250 and California Spyder hit the streets.  It was also fifty years since its corporate stable mate, Maserati, launched the 3500 GT.

Italian autos are not only about speed they’re also about looking good.  Over the years, stunning design has helped these companies earn reputations for the brands and for the designers.  One of the most influential designers, Ugo Zagato (1890 – 1968) was honored for his lifetime contributions to the art of automotive  style for Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Fiat and Ferrari which began with his first assignment for Alfa Romeo in 1921.

ImageSince this is a concours, or concorso, there were trophies to be handed out.  Best of Show went to the 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS owned by Tazio Denicolo.

Other awards were bestowed by magazines; Automobile Magazine, Hemmings Motor News and Auto Aficionado.  These trophies were followed by the Best of Marque awards for the Alfas, De Tomasos, Ferraris, Fiats, Isos, Lamborghinis, Lancias, Maseratis and there were awards even for motorcycles.

This is an event that permeates the senses with a stunning palette of visual pleasures. Words can't do justice to this “celebration of style,” so when you take a look at the pictures think about how much fun it would be to be sipping a nice Pinot Grigio while you enjoy the spectacle.  Ciao.
