Car restorers are a demanding lot; if a part isn’t correct, it isn’t on their car.  The range of correct restoration parts offered by Classic Industries is extensive: sheet metal, glass, weather-stripping, rubber, trim, gauges, interior upholstery, steering wheels, Rally wheels, crate engines, transmissions, you name it.  In fact, for some models, Classic offers more than 90 to 99 percent of all the parts required to build every car it services.

To prove the point, last year the employees of Classic Industries built a 1953 Chevrolet pick-up entirely from catalog parts available through the company’s catalog – and they did it in-house in six months.  The project was featured by Speed Channel's hit series, Chop Cut Rebuild.

Classic Industries was founded in 1976 by Jeff Leonard, a Detroit native living in Southern California. Being a muscle car enthusiast and having grown up in the city that created high performance, Leonard recognized a growing need for parts when the restoration of muscle cars started to become popular in the mid to late 70's.  Starting with Camaro and later moving into other GM lines, Leonard believed that interest in Classic GM vehicles would continue and that GM hobbyists would require a source for quality restoration parts and accessories. Over three decades later, Classic Industries is still the source.

His first products were Camaro carpets under the company name Classic Camaro. He started with a simple ad in a national magazine, but a how-to article in Hot Rod kick-started the business.  With restoration becoming the hot trend in the late Seventies, he renamed the fledgling business Classic Industries. Next, he picked up a GM license. So armed, Leonard was poised to dominate the GM market.

And dominate he did… and does. Today, Classic Industries is the undisputed leader in GM restoration parts. First-generation Camaro and Firebirds are more than 40 years old. Yet, thousands of these gems continue to prowl the streets and drag strips of America and crowd hot rod events and car shows. How? Because Classic Industries has made it their mission to distribute the parts and accessories needed to re create and restore these unique vehicles.

With Classic Industries dominating the GM restoration market, it begs the question: What’s the secret? How have they been so successful, especially for such a long tenure?  “The key to our success is simple,” says Leonard, “We seek out and market the products people need to completely restore their classic vehicles. We make sure the parts we carry are of the absolute highest quality possible and then we sell them at a fair price. We also manage our inventory so we can deliver the products in a timely manner. And finally, we offer excellent service, whether it’s helping a customer choose the right item or processing an order or a return.”

The service aspect at Classic Industries just took a giant step forward recently when the company launched its new website, one that takes full advantage of the Internet’s growing popularity and marketing clout. The website overhaul – the online equivalent of a two-year “frame-off” restoration – features faster, more efficient parts search and buying, complete order tracking, restoration tips, featured cars, and integration with Facebook, My Space, Streetfire and YouTube.  The cars and parts may be “classic,” but the website is cutting edge.

Entering its fourth decade, Classic Industries is well-positioned to weather the current economic storm, with a solid lead in the market and a host of new products in the pipeline, including expansion into non-GM brands. As long as interest in classis cars continues – and there is no reason is shouldn’t – enthusiasts will always be able to restore their cars to their former glory.  All it will take is one phone call (or one mouse click) – to Classic Industries.
