Still, the question is WHY no diesel here? The much larger and higher poluting M530 CDI is sold here today with our new tough emission requirements, so there is no technical reason a tiny CDI would not meet the tests with the SAME engineers (M-B)

I've driven the Smart CDI in Michigan more than once - GREAT car. Needs to be sold here. Write letters to

The confusion comes from the fact that the imperial gallon is significantly larger than the U.S. gallon, MPG figures are 20.095% higher in the UK than in the U.S. for the same real fuel economy. I factored in the difference when calculating the mpg for the Smart in the US.

But you're right, these other cars offer more room and power but not better fuel economy than a diesel powered Smart. - gctvadmin

Something doesn’t seem quite right here. According to this web site: http://cars.uk.msn.com/greenmotoring/article.aspx?cp-documentid=1379476
All the cars on this list are superior to this smart car. It looks like all 10 of these cars carrying four passengers which make them much better than the smart car that only Carries two. In addition, the top three carry four passengers and have better fuel economy. So what’s the deal? Am I missing something?

I want to know why, the smartfortwo cdi that gets 71 mpg with extremely low emmisions is not available in the U.S. EXACTLY WHY, AND THE TRUTH PLEASE, Is
the the American Auto Industry, the Major Oils Companies or Politics? or perhaps all
of the above or none. I also understand this vehicle is less than $10,000 u.s. with
all options. Please someone tell me why? - kerry otterstrom

This is a game changing vehicle. But they shouldn't stop with just the diesel --- bring in the all electric smart two too. People would respond to these like crazy. Let's tell Daimler that that would be really smart. - Michael Rose -- Publisher
